MUJI Singapore

A totebag design competition hosted by MUJI was held in 2018 in conjunction with MUJI Plaza Singapura’s first anniversary.

The theme of this design competition was mySingapore myBag. The entries are encouraged to be the artists' own interpretation of Singapore, inspired by places and spaces that are representative of Singapore’s local culture.

I am really thankful to be chosen as one of the 5 winning entries.

Here is my design and the story behind it:

Title: Baba House

In my neighbourhood, shophouses are always together, with no gaps between each house. It reminded me of close and healthy relationships, where two people have nothing to hide between each other. This inspired me to draw two single shophouses attracted to one another as they are better together. While the two colours chosen were inspired by Peranakan floor tiles that I remembered having in my family’s Malaysian home.

This special designed bag was printed in limited quantities and sold exclusively at MUJI Plaza Singapura from 12 July 2018, while stocks last.

100% of the nett proceeds from sale of bags were donated to Children’s Cancer Foundation. From what I have heard, all the tote bags were sold out within a month. So, I'm really glad to have grabbed one once they were launched.

Here's a photograph of me holding the bag:
